Coronado Flower Show General Rules
Please read carefully before entering exhibits:
PORTS OF CALL is a Standard Flower Show and conforms to the standards and objectives of the
National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc. as stated in The Handbook for Flower Shows, updated in 2005. The
schedule is the law of the show and all entries must conform.
- Exhibitors: Competition is open to any amateur gardener or designer.
- Liability: The Coronado Floral Association will not assume liability for loss or damage to any entry or container. Precautions will be taken to protect the exhibits by the Flower Show Committee
- Number of Entries: No exhibitor will be permitted more than one entry in each class, except in the horticultural sections where one entry of each variety may be entered and in the orchid and bonsai sections where more than one entry of each variety may be entered.
- Control of Entries: All exhibits are subject to qualification and approval by the Section Chair. Once accepted, the Section Chair will direct the classification and placement of each entry into its particular class.
- Hours for Entries: The Section Committees will be on duty from 4 pm to 6 pm Friday, and from 7 am to 9:30 am Saturday, to receive entries in the show. All entries must be in the hands of these committees no later than 9:30 am Saturday, in order that they may be judged. Entries must be picked up at 4:00 pm Sunday, except for roses and cut flowers which will be sold.
- Containers: All containers furnished by exhibitors should be labeled on the bottom with the owner's name and phone number.
- Judging: The exhibit areas must be cleared by 9:45 am Saturday. Judging will begin promptly at 10 am. The standard system of awarding will be used. One First (blue), one Second (red), one Third (yellow) and one or more Honorable Mention (white) ribbons may be awarded in each class, if deemed merited. Decisions of the judges shall be final. Certificates of award will be prepared for each exhibitor winning a ribbon. Exhibitors may obtain these certificates from the Section Chair at the close of the show. All entries will be judged in accordance with the standards stated in The Handbook for Flower Shows, updated 2005.
- Awards and Trophies: Trophy presentation is on Sunday at 3 pm at the bandstand. The trophies awarded are perpetual trophies and are the property of the Association. They are loaned to the recipient for a period of one year. They will be recalled one month prior to the next year's show. Miniature trophies are for the permanent possession of recipients.
- Show Hours: The show will be open to the public on Saturday from 1 pm to 5:00 pm and on Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.
- Pets: No pets are allowed inside the Flower Show. No pets are allowed in Spreckels Park. (City of Coronado Municipal Code, Title 32-Animal Regulations)
Scale of Points for Judging Exhibits
Horticultural Division
All entries will be judged in accordance with the standards prescribed in the 1999 edition of the
Handbook for Flower Shows, pages 273-277. Copies are available in the reference section of the
Coronado Public Library. The Horticulture and Design Chairmen also have copies.
Design Division
Within the Design Division, classes eligible for the CREATIVITY Awards are designated by "C."
Those eligible for the TRICOLOR Awards are designated by "T."
Designs are judged by Scale of Points as follows:
